STAAD Foundation Advanced Help

Global Settings dialog

Used to set global defaults for STAAD Foundation Advanced designs and output.

Opens when the Global Options tool is selected from the Home ribbon tab.

Dialog Control Description
Apply Saves the settings and closes the dialog.

General Settings tab

SettingDescription
Reinforcement Spacing Increment

For jobs with US code and English unit system (in inches)

For other cases (in millimeters)

Dimension Display

Select either to Use Current Length Unit or Use Ft-In Unit for drawing output.

Min c/c Pile Distance Type the number of pile diameters to use as the minimum center-to-center distance between piles. The default value is set to 3. Minimum value allowable is 1.5. For values in between 1.5 to 3, pile group effects need to be considered in the design. STAAD Foundation Advanced does not consider pile group effect.
Decimal Places for Column Coordinates Select the number of places after the decimal used int he column coordinate fields for placing columns.

Rigid Foundation Settings tab

SettingDescription
Top Reinforcement Settings

Select to Always Calculate Top Reinforcement Based on Concrete and Soil Weight or to Calculate Top Reinforcement Only When Foundation is Subjected to Uplift Forces. The first option will always include top reinforcement, where as the latter will omit it if the calculations indicate it is not necessary due to applied forces.

Specify a the Self Weight Factor for Top Reinforcement if other than unity (1), which is used to design top reinforcement when the Always Calculate Top Reinforcement Based on Concrete and Soil Weight option is set.

SettingDescription
Check Minimum Reinforced Based on Top and Bottom Combined (US Code Only) Minimum reinforcement checks consider both top and bottom reinforcement together.
Concrete Check Self Weight Settings

These settings are only applied for rigid analysis (i.e., not for mat foundations).

Select the method to be used for self weight in concrete design:

  • Neglect Footing self weight for concrete checks
  • Consider net pressure for concrete checks - As uniform pressure resulting from self weight is deducted from total pressure, the slope of bearing pressure is correctly maintained unlike without self weight option. Resultant bearing pressure using net pressure approach gives pragmatic values for shear and moment.
  • Consider footing self weight for concrete checks - Select this option to include the self weight of the footing, along with soil dead weight and buoyancy effect in concrete design check. This option is particularly useful when footing loses contact with the soil (uplift condition), as the concrete design tends to be very non conservative without consideration of self weight
Bearing Capacity Settings

Select the option for how bearing capacity is input in the program:

  • Gross Bearing Capacity Input
  • Net Bearing Capacity Input
SettingDescription
Use Variable Bearing Capacity For use with US Code Isolated footing only. When this option is set, a table of bearing capacities based on footing size and depth is used instead of a single bearing capacity value.
Reinforcement Placement Option

Clear this option if Z direction reinforcement will be in bottom layer. Effective depth calculations are affected by this selection.

Pedestal Analysis/Design Settings

SettingDescription
Pedestal Reinforcement Options Set the max. and min. reinforcing steel ratios for use with US Code designs
  • Minimum column steel ratio
  • Maximum column steel ratio
